My name is Hannah and I work as a play and creative arts therapist in primary schools, with my own private play therapy space at home in Chichester.
I am a certified member of Play Therapy UK (PTUK membership no.202104662) which gives you the assurance that I practice with high ethical standards of efficacy, professionalism and safety.
I am trained in Developmental Trauma, and have regular professional supervision and CPD training.
I also work as an associate lecturer in the Childhood department at Chichester University.
I have over 20+ years of experience as a primary school teacher across Bristol, Brighton and West Sussex, with a specialism in Early Years.
I am Portage trained, and worked as part of the West Sussex team, supporting pre school children with additional needs.
I bring all this experience and knowledge into my work supporting children and their families in play therapy.
Play therapy is a unique type of creative therapy that can be especially suited to children aged 4+ years.
Play is a gateway for children to express their feelings and explore their world. Play therapy can help children make sense of whatever is happening in their lives, let them act out and work through emotions and behaviours.
Play therapy can help children process on both a conscious and subconscious level. It can help children build their sense of self awareness and confidence in all areas of their life. It does not require the child to talk or answer any direct questions.
Play therapy takes place each week in a safe and confidential space with a range of toys and resources for the child to choose from.
Over time, the therapeutic relationship builds between client and therapist, and this is at the heart of play therapy. My role as a therapist is to facilitate the child’s processing journey in a safe, non judgmental environment, enabling behaviours and thought patterns to shift. The resources in the therapy space are carefully selected to support this process.
The resources include:
Sand, clay, art materials, musical instruments, role play, puppets, small world play, games and therapeutic stories.
The session are non directive, and each client is free to choose whatever they wish to explore with few limitations. Depending on each client, I will introduce direct activities when appropriate to support the therapy.
Session are 50 minutes and happen at the same time each week with the same resources available. This helps the client build a consistent and predictable routine, knowing what to expect each week. This is a key element of play therapy.
Before sessions begin, I will meet with the parent/carer to discuss concerns. We complete detailed paperwork together to create a holistic picture of the child. This is a great opportunity to ask lots of questions. I will discuss my policies on safeguarding, data protection, cancellation and how you can support the therapy at home.
My private play therapy space has its own side access with toilet facilities attached. There is plenty of free parking close by.
Sessions can also take place at the child’s school if this is felt to be more appropriate. Logistics would be arranged in conjunction with the SENDCO/Headteacher.
I also work with groups of children in schools with a shared therapeutic goal e.g. anxiety, transition to new classes, friendship issues and regulation.
I recommend 12 sessions to begin and a review at 8 sessions. It is important for parents /carers/school to be involved in the review process so we can work together to plan the next steps. The child’s voice is also an important part of this review.
